Astonishing, 22 years have passed since the release of Stefan Betke's debut album as Pole. Along with the "2" and "3" albums that followed in 19respectively, it helped establish him as a producer with a defiantly distinctive, dub-fired sound: a brand of electronic minimalism that drew just as much on ambient and micro-house as it did techno and of course reggae soundsystem culture.

~Scape reissues Pole's legendary first three consecutive albums, 1 (), 2 (), and 3 () in an ultimate trilogy 3CD package, including four bonus tracks. This reissue is a deliberate statement reinforced by the numbering and stringent monochrome three-color cover art. Minimalism as a form of art/5(5).

Crackles, sparks, pops, hisses, and static farts generally provide the percussion throughout this truly interesting album. Definitely background music, Pole 2 pulls its influences (barely) from dub and at times ragga (to even lesser extent). It's surprisingly minimalist /5(4).

The res album, “2”, carries on with this tradition with conceptual song titles such as “Streit” (=dispute), “Hafen” (=harbour), and “Huckepack” (=piggyback). Stefan Betke bases these names on his own personal association with a particular song, and they also serve as his private method of archival.

In honour of the launch of the Love Record Stores campaign, Mute has decided to make Pole's first three albums available on coloured vinyl, with the shade used on the platter inside matching that of the iconic cover artwork. Thus, this reissue of "2", his sophomore set, comes on deep red wax.
